Google: The Call to Serve
Few people know about the military first responders who immediately deployed into danger in Afghanistan in the days after 9/11. Google Maps teamed up with the 9/11 Museum during Veterans Week with a special installation exhibit that let the veterans tell their stories and map them on the globe.
The 9/11 Museum Exhibit
The Platform
Nine military veterans and service members from the Marines, Army Special Forces, and Coast Guard told their stories with their own words, images, and videos, marking each moment on the map.
The Event Poster
"The Horse Soldier" statue at the museum represents the Special Forces who were on the ground in Afghanistan before their equipment arrived, infiltrating Taliban on horses borrowed from local tribesmen. Our exhibit featured one of those soldier's stories.
The Ceremony
The veterans and service members from our exhibit were honored with a special ceremony at the museum.
